MacGregor's Review

One of our favorite places for pub grub is MacGregor's (the one in Henrietta).  Often we get the chicken nachos, but this time we were with Fancy's sister, and she decided to try out the new pulled pork nachos.  When they came out they looked bland, but they were delicious!

Whenever we go to this place we get a few items and split them.  This is the Buffalo Combo.  It comes with 6 wings, 6 boneless wings, and 6 chicken fingers.  You can get any sauce you like, but I recommend the Buffalo hot and the sweet and spicy chili.

Then we have the Ultimate Fries.  I especially like it when they give us plenty of bacon.  These are absolutely delicious.  I highly recommend this place, and give it 4.5 stars for when you're in the mood for some pub grub!

Alex's Place Review

Last week Fancy and I hit Alex's Place for date night.  Fancy had the BBQ Platter pictured above which had ribs, 1/2 chicken, and pulled pork.  Oh, except they said pulled pork was replaced by pot roast.  Whatever, Fancy said it was good.  Unfortunately, the 1/2 chicken wasn't so great.

I had the Ribs & Wing Combo.  It looked extremely enticing on the menu, but the actual meal left something to be desired.  First, the wings were not cooked crispy as I requested.  Admittedly the waitress may not have heard me, so no points are docked for that.  However, the wings should have been tossed in sauce "Buffalo style," but they were not.  They were pretty tasteless unless you really rolled them around in the surplus sauce pooled on the plate.  This should have been a non-issue since I ordered them hot.

Two more points on my Combo.  First, the menu showed steak fries, and they weren't.  I hate that.  Second, the ribs were good.  Not great, just...good.  And, that is only because they were cooked perfectly.  The sauce wasn't very good or unique.  Not even close to the fine rib sauce at just about any other decent rib joint in the Roc (such as Texas Bar-B-Q Joint (my personal favorite) or Sticky Lips).  Oh, and the bread up there?  Not good.  This is especially sad because our region is sort of a mecca for great bread enthusiasts, and local places with bad bread are few and far between.

Fancy upgraded her soup to the French Onion Soup which she said was very good.  It was nicely toasted and quite cheesy.  So, y'all may not know this, but Fancy isn't usually too involved with rating places.  She tends to think most places are fine or good, but nothing that lets me know she has a real strong feeling about where a place should rate.  The exception to this has historically been when something is awesomely good or terribly bad.

To give you an idea of how underwhelmed we both were, Fancy leaned across the table and said, "three stars."  This food was the epitome of average, and that's not a good thing.  To be fair, I had high expectations since they were voted People's Choice at RocCity Ribfest, and everyone says how awesome they are.  With that considered, it still gets 3 stars.  Or as my Mom would say: "It's nothing to write home about."

Polska Chata Review

Y'all may remember about 9 months ago I did a post called "3 Best Places to Eat in Irondequoit."  Well, as of today all three of those places have full reviews on this site.  As a recap, they are Monte Alban (best Mexican food in Rochester area BY FAR), Ridge Donut Cafe (best doughnuts anywhere, ever), and today Polska Chata!

This place is amazing.  The ambiance is fantastic, and the staff is super friendly and personable.  Those up there are the pierogies.  They used to offer different options for the topping, but now it's just the onions.  Still awesome.  They're cooked in onions and butter.  This here is the potato/cheese version, and they are delightful.

We had other things, too, but I forgot to take pictures...sorry.  We were super hungry, so just believe me when I tell you the potato pancakes are delightful and the cabbage roll divine.  These here are the cheese blintzes and they were awesome.  They are the perfect dessert-like item, nice and crispy on the outside and soft in the center.  So, if you're in the mood for something a little different, head on over to Polska Chata.  Most meals are around $10, and this okapi gives it 4.5 stars!  Oh, and you can score a restaurant.com certificate to make it even lighter on your wallet.

Spaz is the Best Wrestler EVER.

Wrestling is AWESOME.  You know how I know?  I went to a local match yesterday, and it was the best event I've been to since...the Wyoming County Parade.

I have a favorite wrestler.  Spaz up there is FUCKING wonderful.  He's like a mini-version of Drewcifer.  This guy even humps his opponents leg.

He and his Pikachu have matching masks...he even talks to his Pikachu before he wrestles.  During intermission he walks around like a tiny, slinking animal and encourages people to scratch his head.  This is a pic of him investigating my camera.

Later, he was trying to get the lady in the row in front of us to pay attention to him, and when she ignored him he climbed onto her lap.  Then he stared at Fancy and looking curious, stepped toward her.
Fancy: "Hey, dude."
Spaz: *staring curiously and stepping closer*
Me: (exasperated)"Fancy, pet him!"
Fancy: (sounding put out) "Why?"
Me: "Because he's cute."
Fancy: *scratches Spaz's head*

Unfortunately he didn't win his match, but he did make a new fan.  This guy rocks.  At the end of the night, I said to Fancy: "I want one!!"  To which she responded: "That's just what we need: something else we have to pet and pretend to like."  Awesome.

Blue Ocean Review

Blue Ocean is a Japanese restaurant in my neighborhood that offers certificates on Restaurant.com, so Ewok and I hit it up for a little dinner this week.  That up there is Ewok's bento box.  She got the tempura shrimp and veggies.  It was served with a California roll, rice, soup, and salad.

Since we had the certificate for $25 off $35, we grabbed a pork gyoza appetizer for $5.  It was extremely tasty and had a great texture.  These were light, yet slightly crispy on the outside.  I really enjoyed them.

I got a bento box as well.  Mine had chicken teriyaki and tempura chicken.  The teriyaki sauce, and the tempura dipping sauce is delicious.  It is sweet and salty.  This was served with tempura vegetables, a California roll, rice, soup, and salad.  Ewok wished she knew the box automatically came with the veggies, because then she would have gotten some chicken, too.

Each box was around $17, which is a good value for how much food you get.  The staff is very friendly, and the food is served super fast.  It's a great little place.  If you're ever over on the westside, 4.5 okapi stars says, check this little gem out.

Furless on a Treadmill

Sorry about the single post last week.  I have been crazy busy working on a paper for school.  However, next week the load should lighten up some.  Until then, a video of a furless dog on our new treadmill...
